Paediatric Circumcision

Circumcision is commonly carried out in early infancy, usually within the initial days to weeks after birth.

Description

The indications for an elective circumcision are for phimosis, religious reasons, as part of family or cultural traditions, and for personal hygiene or preventative health reasons.

  • Phimosis is a condition where the foreskin is too tight and can not be retracted over the glans. In many cases we would prescribe a topical steroid as first line treatment and proceed with a circumcision if it fails.

On the day of the operation

  • Most procedures are performed as a day case under anaesthesia.
  • You will need to be starved for 6hours prior t the surgery, but they may drink clear fluids (water & apple juice) until 2 hours before surgery.

After the circumcision

  • You will receive detailed instruction regarding wound care and you can expect the wound to be healed within 7 days.
  • There might be a few drops of blood while removing the dressing or changing a nappy and should not cause for any concern. Bruising and swelling of the skin occurs frequently and will resolve within a few days.
  • Generally, your baby’s penis will be a little painful for the first day or two after the circumcision, and it is important to give some pain medicine regularly.

Complications

  • Bleeding is the most common complication following circumcision and you should contact your doctor or visit the nearest emergency room if there is any concern.
  • Skin bridges can form between the glans and the surgical wound, which can be prevented with proper wound care.
  • Surgical site infection is always a complication of any surgery and please seek medical care if you are concerned.
