Paediatric Hydrocele

Fluid buildup in the thin pouch that holds the testes in the scrotum

Description

A Hydrocele is caused by an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the layers around the testicle and spermatic cord. They are often found in newborns and especially in premature babies. The condition normally resolves within the first year.

You may notice a swelling of 1 or both sides of the scrotum and the size may change during the day.

Treatment options

  • They often resolve spontaneously with the 1st year of life.
  • Surgery via a small groin incision and removal of the fluid filled sac may be offered if it persists.
