Peyronie’s Disease

Fibrous scar tissue forms in the deeper tissues under the skin of the penis.

Description

Common condition that affects many men and is characterised by the formation of scar tissue in the erectile part of the penis, causing a deformity in the penis, commonly curvature.

Signs

  • Bent or deformed penis
  • Palpable lump on the shaft of the penis
  • Pain during an erection or intercourse
  • Erectile dysfunction

History and physical examination, including evaluating the penis in the erect state is important to determine the degree of curvature.

Treatment Options

  • Reassurance
  • Penile traction therapy to prevent curvature and penile shortening. 
  • Medications such as PDE5-inhibitors are important.
  • Sometimes injection therapy can help improve deformity.
  • Reconstructive surgery is reserved for severe curvature, which is affecting sexual functioning and can range from suture plication, surgical correction, or a penile prosthesis.
